Green Hydrogen: Realistic Salvation or Investment Bubble?

As global industrial policy pivots hard towards total decarbonization, green hydrogen has emerged as a cornerstone of national energy transitions. Billions in public subsidies and private investments are flowing into hydrogen production facilities. But beneath the climate-neutral optimism lies a complex web of logistics challenges and thermodynamic limitations.
The Thermodynamic Bottleneck
The core challenge of green hydrogen is efficiency. The round-trip efficiency of converting renewable energy to hydrogen via electrolysis, storing it, and converting it back to usable power is currently below 45%. This high energy loss means we must build double the renewable generation capacity to achieve the same net power output.

Furthermore, hydrogen molecules are incredibly small and volatile, making pipeline leakage and material embrittlement major engineering risks. Transporting liquid hydrogen requires cryogenic storage at -253°C, an extremely energy-intensive process that further reduces net efficiency.
Where Hydrogen Fits
Despite these challenges, green hydrogen is essential for sectors that cannot be easily electrified. Heavy industries like steel production, chemical manufacturing, and maritime transport require the high energy density and chemical properties that only hydrogen can provide.
